There are a lot of expectations on any sales agent irrespective of the level. The need to be continuously self-assessing, self-motivating and being able to rise to any new challenges in an instant can all take its toll. So if your focus has been completely on work, work, work with little time to even crack a smile, it’s time to indulge in a little work-place humour.
Research into the work-place has found that people actually improve within their roles if they can enjoy a sense of fun at work. Humour has been shown to aid concentration and to increase communication. If you had the choice of working in an environment where there is a warm atmosphere and the occasional banter with a colleague as opposed to an environment where its head down and the whip is cracked, the chances are that you would choose the work-place where you are going to be the most appreciated and productive.
It’s true that taking time out to laugh can help you to get rid of any negative feelings that might occur at work though and would allow you to focus much more succinctly on the tasks at hand. In addition, laughter allows you to build bonds with your colleagues. A little humour enables you to enjoy the work-place much more. Any sales role can be intense with unlimited challenges each day so being able to let off a little steam and to laugh when things go wrong as opposed to taking things to heart. Sometimes, humour can be frowned
upon at work and of course there is a time and a place to indulge in a fit of the giggles and it’s important to ensure that your humour is always appropriate.
Humour isn’t about making practical jokes at someone’s expense; it’s about laughing with your colleagues and sharing the stress of a busy day. Humour is about relieving pressure, consolidating bonds and yet will enable you to still focus on the task at hand and to achieve goals.
In real estate, it’s likely that you work long and sometimes unsociable hours. You need to focus, present an air of confidence to potential clients and have an unshakeable sense of professionalism at all times but remember, this doesn’t mean that you can’t laugh inwardly at any stupid thing that occurs or even to laugh at yourself from time to time. Your job may be serious but you don’t have to see everything and everyone in the same serious way, soften your perception and attitude sometimes and show that you are a person with depth and warmth. Often, colleagues and clients appreciate the human element much more.
The ability to see the funny side of life will enable others to
warm to you. It will also make your life so much better and in fact, will enable you to deal with stress so much more readily. Having a sense of humour can make your day go faster and your work more productive. Of course humour can also be used very productively in the work-place especially if you have to hold meetings or to make a significant point during an important discussion. Think about humour and communication as going hand in hand.
Even if your work-place has generally a good atmosphere, there are bound to be difficult situations throughout the day and if you know your colleagues well, sometimes a little humour can break up a difficult situation and make everyone smile. Therefore, dispelling any moments of tension. Humour is a real morale booster too and should always be used where possible to motivate yourself and others too, just remember that there is a time and a place to be funny. Choose your moments wisely.
